A brief synopsis of the Federal Farm Bill: Once or twice a decade Congress passes one of the most important pieces of legislation for their respective legislative period. It is the largest piece of legislation pertaining to the Nation’s farmers. It grants billions of dollars in support of the farming industry. It is absurdly complex and is usually hundreds of pages long.
The Bill would have negatively affected New York City as food banks are already overworked and in dire need of monetary help and the impoverished would have been hungrier. There are some critics, however, that say those who are on food stamps purchase fatty food substances that they should not be eating! Food stamps should only be allowed only to purchase staple items— bread, milk, eggs, fruits, vegetables to name a few—not soda, cheese doodles, and fatty foods generally. Additionally, critics argue that people abuse the system and there needs to be major oversight for those that are on it. If you are overweight and have medical problems the very last thing you should be eating are fatty substances that will exacerbate your weight predicament.
Both sides are rational but it is up to the federal government to decide which based upon their bizarre bipartisanship, it does not seem like it will happen anytime soon.
